One of my favorite food events of the year is coming up soon, the newly re-branded TASTE! Central Florida Saturday, August 19, 2017 from 6:45 p.m. 10:00 p.m. LOCAL EVENT. LOCAL CHEFS. LOCAL CAUSE. In previous years, proceeds (from what was formerly called Taste of the Nation) have impacted thousands of lives both locally and around the country. Organizers have decided to further pinpoint the direction this year by advocating more directly for those in our neighboring communities struggling to put food on their plates. TASTE! Central Florida is one of the largest fundraisers of the year for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. Check out all the fun! [embedded content] Tickets Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased here. What can you expect? The beautiful ballroom at Orlando World Center Marriott is wall-to-wall with tables of bountiful, fun, and creative food and drink options. Theyre not, however, the only offerings. Guests can participate in a fully-automated mobile silent auction featuring signed memorabilia, stays at upscale hotels, dining experiences, rounds of golf on area courses, and exotic adventures and getaways. Taste! Central Florida is also bringing back the Edible Orlando Giving Tree, where guests can win certificates and gift cards to Orlandos most popular establishments. Donate $50 for the chance to select envelopes hanging from a towering tree. Prizes range from $25 to $300 in value. Its an exciting way to donate. Who knows what youll win? Wine lovers will enjoy the Instant Wine Cellar game where participants have a chance to win more than 150 bottles of wine valued at more than $2,500! Guests can also take their chances on winning a bottle of wine with a Ring Toss For Wine fundraiser. When a ring lands around a bottle neck, the guest wins a bottle of wine to take home. Last year this was incredibly popular. Who wouldnt want to win a bottle to take home? Who else LOVES going to this foodie event? In the week since a massacre at a South Florida high school claimed the lives of 17 people, more than a dozen children and teenagers have been arrested in Central Florida, accused of threatening local schools. Authorities say they are taking a strict stance against such incidents, vowing to investigate and prosecute all threats even when students later claim they were only joking. Several of the students arrested in the past week are facing felony charges. Lets be clear: Their actions have serious consequences and will result in their arrest, Casselberry Police Chief Larry Krantz said in a statement Thursday, after a 12-year-old girl was arrested as a suspect in threats against three Seminole County schools. Authorities were made aware of threats the student posted online targeting Casselberry Elementary School, South Seminole Middle School and Sterling Park Elementary School, a police spokesperson said. Police found the girl, a student at South Seminole Middle School, and charged her with threatening to discharge a destructive device a felony. The girl was a good student who was troubled by statements other children made about the Parkland shooting, Krantz said at a news conference Thursday. She said she made the threats so students would take the situation seriously, he said. At Jackson Heights Middle School, another student became frustrated during gym class Thursday and threatened to shoot up the campus, Oviedo Police Chief Dale Coleman told reporters. The 13-year-old student was also arrested. Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said at the news conference that about 25 threats targeting Seminole schools have been made in the past two weeks none of them credible. Though students who make threats are arrested, their punishments are decided on a case-by-case basis, Lemma said at the news conference. Authorities consider factors such as the students mental health, home life and whether the child has made threats before, he said. Kimberly Renk, a psychologist who specializes in young childhood trauma, says it is important for authorities and school administrators to carefully consider what these children have gone through in the past. There has to be some understanding of adverse childhood experiences, said Renk, who is also an associate professor at University of Central Florida. Bad things happen to kids, and if were not aware which children are having these sorts of experiences, then were going to see a lot more difficulties over the long run. In Volusia County, a 16-year-old student was arrested at Deltona High School on Thursday after a gate attendant overheard him say, I have a gun in my backpack, deputies said. The student told a deputy that he meant the comment as a joke. He was still charged with a felony, as Volusia County deputies say they have zero tolerance for this type of behavior. On Wednesday, a 16-year-old student in Lake County was arrested after a student on a school bus overheard him threatening to shoot up Leesburg High School, authorities said. The teen told deputies he made a mental list of all the students and teachers who have disrespected him, the Sheriffs Office said. He was released to his grandmother Thursday morning. According to a sheriffs spokesman, deputies returned later and detained him under the Baker Act, which allows mental health facilities to hold a person for up to 72 hours for evaluation. In an era in which campus lockdowns and threats are the norm, simply walking into school can be an anxiety-inducing experience for teens, Renk said. I think there is a widespread impact on students, especially with schools doing extra drills, she said. Students are having trouble going to school because theyre afraid. After a threat which specifically referred to this past Tuesday was written on a bathroom wall at Lake Mary High School, less than 20 percent of the schools 2,900 students went to school that day, a Seminole County school district spokesman said. No student has been arrested for the threat, which was made before the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I dont think theres going to be an end to this until we have massive reforms in all levels of society, Renk said. Staffer Leslie Postal and Jason Ruiter contributed to this report. New Years Vibe: How to Keep it Going All Year January carries a special vibe starting just after Christmas. Chock-full of promise and energy, you get the feeling of having a clean slate to start everything anew. Friends all over social media post their word of the year, pictures of shiny new planners, the amazing closet they just reorganized or the bags of clutter out by the curb. Somewhere near mid-February, the diet has derailed, you can barely close the closet again and the planner is M.I.A. So how can we make it to March, April and the rest of the year?! I make plans every year but last year, I made a change. I started a new habit of keeping a family calendar posted in the kitchen. I purchased an 18-month calendar that coincides with the school year. I started filling it with appointments and important dates. My planner is still alive and kicking! Ill share my tips for keeping the New Years vibe going all year long! Put It On The Calendar Whats the difference between January 1st and December 31st? Its a scheduled holiday. Just about every calendar prints, New Years Day, on the first square of the year. Plan for revamping your goals. Pick a date and write it in. Januarys word of the year, may be null and void by June. Remember to think of your resolutions, budgets, goals, and plans as working documents. No need to keep them as they were day one if theyre not working for you. If you know you run out of steam by March, schedule your overhaul by the end of February. Make sure it works for your personality. While you may only need this once or twice a year, someone else may need a quarterly or monthly plan. Dont Forget The Fun Lets not forget why planning and organizing seem like fun in January. First, you probably purchased new organizing bins, a planner or new workout clothes. Shiny and new equals fun-to-play-with. Youve chatted with friends and family about plans for the year. Dont forget the social aspect. Bloggers and influencers ask about your plans while chatting about theirs. Doesnt it feel like everyone making plans and resolutions? Those posts are all but gone around March, the fun has faded. Take action yourself and plan the social side! Whether its virtual or in person, plan a goal-setting social event. Invite people to check-in and share whats worked, whats changing and what they plan to add. Host a dream boardtogether where everyone plans out their goals together. And dont forget the champagne. After all, bubbles make planning feel more like fun than work. Dont Get Stuck No one besides you knows the details of your plans and resolutions so keep pushing forward, even if you miss a goal or resolution. Ultimately, starting over that diet in March and shouting it from the rooftop can be fantastic. Think of it as a reset, not a failure. Maybe telling others will provide all the inspiration someone needs to start. Good luck in your goal setting. Do you have a family calendar? How do you keep your goals in check? Maybe they should have offered tacos. Carmel Kitchen Wine Bar, a fledgling chain out of the Tampa area, has closed its Winter Park location barely five years after opening there. The casually upscale concept had previously tried a second Central Florida location, in Altamonte Springs, that was shorter lived. Reviewed here in 2013, Carmel, which opened with the name Carmel Cafe but changed to Kitchen, presumably to ease its way into other states where the name might already be in use, was warmly accepted for its food and atmosphere, if not immediately for its service. When it opened, it featured menus and wine lists on iPads, with varying results -- the information was not always accurate and some guests recoiled at the thought of using devices that had just been finger-swiped by guests at another table. The space, at 160 N. Orlando Ave., Winter Park, had previously been an office building. When Carmel opened there were relatively few restaurants nearby, Rocco's Italian, El Bodegon and Hillstone among them. (Italio had just opened and Marlow's Tavern was soon to. Italio is now where Glass Knife recently started caking.) Carmel was founded by father and son team Chris and Alex Sullivan; the elder Sullivan was co-founder of the Outback Steakhouse chain. The Carmel Kitchen website currently lists five locations, four in Florida and one in Allentown, Penn. The Winter Park location has been removed from the site, although the page with employment opportunities still lists it as having openings in all areas. The phone number rings through with no answer, but then so do the phones at some of the other locations. Attempts to contact managers involved in the Winter Park Carmel were not immediately successful. https://www.scottjosephorlando.com/news/4210-carmel-kitchen-wine-bar-closes-in-winter-park I agree with most of what this blogger stated however, not the whole thing.
Those who know me well tend to describe me as the person who is typically late on the newest trends and happenings. So this year Ive decided its time to catch up on everything that Im supposedly missing out on. Case and point: Hello Fresh and Blue Apron. In short, these two companies offer weekly meal delivery service complete with step by step cooking instructions. For me, it was more about trying new recipes and being too lazy to go to the grocery store that prompted me to try it. Now originally I meant to try these two delivery services one at a time, but I had a blonde moment and accidentally had them both delivered on the same day! (Learn from my mistakes people). However, the good thing about having both boxes delivered at the same time wasthat I could test both of them and see which one, if either I would re-order again. Hello Fresh Boxes on top and Blue Apron Box on the bottom. HELLO FRESH The good: One of the best things about Hello Fresh that I found was the packaging! Since there are 3 recipes, they pack 3 individual boxes inside the bigger box so you know exactly what goes with what. Easy= a huge plus for me when Im cooking. On top of that, when you are done cooking, clean up is super simple because you throw all of your trash back in the little box that you had all of your ingredients in. Genius!! All the meals were super easy and tasted delicious, so I was a happy camper. Heres an idea of what the Hello Fresh Box looks like with instructions. My favorite part- the easy clean up! One of the Hello Fresh dinners I made. Salmon with couscous and vegetables. The bad: As much as I wanted to brag on Hello Fresh, I do have to be honest and say that they left out a key ingredient in one of my boxes. I was disappointed to have to go (read: send my husband) to the grocery store in order for me to complete the meal that I was already in the process of making. Another downside for me is price. The first box comes at an inexpensive $29 for 3 mealsso basically $10 a meal. However, after that it jumps to $70 for 3 meals. Oh, and be careful to turn off delivery after the first week if you dont want it anymore or it will keep charging you. BLUE APRON The good: My first order from Blue Apron was FREE. Yes, as in ZERO dollars spent for 3 meals and all of the ingredients. Another plus about it was that it came with little things like butter that were already portioned out. I dont typically keep butter in my fridge so it was nice to have that included. The biggest pro that I see for Blue Apron is the price. At only $59 for 3 meals, it is one of the most inexpensive delivery services I have seen. One of the few times weve actually eaten at the dinner table instead of the couch! The bad: Blue Aprons packaging was an OCD persons NIGHTMARE compared to Hello Fresh. Luckily, my husband did the opening of the Blue Apron box while I was at work, but to make a long story short, the box just has all of the ingredients for all 3 meals thrown in together in no orderly fashion. This for me is enough to induce a semi-panic attack. So if you do decide to go with Blue Apron, prepare to spend some extra time sorting through the ingredients before you start cooking. Blue Apron ingredients and recipemuch less organized than Hello Fresh. THE WINNER All in all, my experiences with Hello Fresh and Blue Apron were positive. Both came with recipes that I wouldnt normally try on my own, and the steps were easy to follow. My husband liked Blue Apron more because it was cheaper and he doesnt care about the unorganized packaging, while I think that Hello Fresh is the best because of the convenient packaging and easy clean up. So I guess its a tie?I have a promo code for Hello Fresh but unfortunately I cant find any for Blue Apron. I got my free Blue Apron meal from a friend who was a regular subscriber. Thanks Mal!
